Availability
To be successful in today's 24x7 world, organizations need continuous access to their JD Edwards applications. A managed solution from WTS provides increased system availability, improved performance, enhanced security, and maximum uptime.
The metric used to measure availability is the percentage of time that a system is capable of serving its intended function. When applied to services from WTS, system availability is the percentage of time that your JD Edwards applications are available to your organization.
Availability is typically measured in "nines." For example, a solution with an availability level of "three nines" is capable of supporting its intended function 99.9 percent of the time. This is equivalent to annual downtime of 8.76 hours per year when the systems run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The following table lists common availability levels that many organizations attempt to achieve.
| Availability | % Downtime |
|---|---|
| 95% | 438 hours per year |
| 99% | 87.6 hours |
| 99.5% | 43.8 hours |
| 99.9% | 8.76 hours |
| 99.99% | 52.56 minutes |
From a user's viewpoint, the term availability is easily defined: the user's applications and data should be continuously accessible. Unfortunately, measuring availability is not as simple as selecting one of the preceding availability percentages. You must decide what metric your organization wants to use to qualify downtime. For example, a company may consider downtime to occur when a business critical application like payroll is not available. Another may consider downtime to occur only when a significant percentage of their users (i.e. more than 50%) are affected by an outage.
WTS offers multiple high availability strategies to our JD Edwards customers. We load balance our connectivity equipment and systems that are critical to accessing your JD Edwards software. We also configure your connectivity and network configurations to support the communications protocol between our data centers and your geographically dispersed work force. Load balancing yields improved performance and, if a single server fails, incoming requests will continue to be redistributed across the remaining servers. Finally, we schedule planned downtime to correspond with the Primary Hours of Operations for your organization. Scheduled maintenance and routine data center operations are done at a time when your organization is not impacted by these required functions.
WTS delivers highly available JD Edwards systems that are available when you need it, enabling your IT staff to focus on strategic initiatives that address real business goals.
More About our Abilities
The terms Scalability, Reliability, and Availability are used to describe the expectations for infrastructure and data center operations that support enterprise-wide business applications like Oracle's JD Edwards product family. The operational systems that support these applications must meet your stringent uptime and availability measurements.
